Wow!!! What a month of June! We celebrated with three couples as they renewed their wedding vows, we renewed old acquaintances with two former TI Presidents, Karen Ross and Chris Kronick (and Chris' husband, Jon,) who came from Toronto to be a part of the Ron Marks Kabbalat Shabbat Dinner, and we watched with pride as two of our fine young women, Sophie Sicular Moodie and Lexi Wright, became B'not Mitzvah. We also held our constitutionally-mandated Annual General Meeting where we learned the good news that our house is in good order in so many ways - religiously, socially, financially, and physically. We saw a preview of our long-awaited new Ark, Ner Tamid, and reading table, which will add to the beauty of the Rabbi Joel and Ailene Wittstein Sanctuary and our religious services (and allow us to leave our "old" Ark and reading table over at the JCC so that after this coming High Holy Day season, there will be no more schlepping of this cumbersome furniture back and forth between the Temple and the JCC. Hooray!!! In case you missed the announcement at the AGM, we expect to unveil the new Ark and its accompanying pieces at Simchat Torah.
At the AGM, we also thanked our outgoing Social Action chairperson, Leora Swartzman, for her more than ten years of performing this important role in our congregation. We are still looking for somebody to take over from Leora and we promise it doesn't have to be for as many years. We also thanked two outstanding and out-going (and outgoing in the other sense) Vice-Presidents - Rael Wienburg as VP-Operations and Tom Casler as VP- Programming. Both have done outstanding jobs for our shul and deserve our deepest thanks. Also, several members-at-large of the Board stepped down. Many thanks to Sue Baker, Randy Woodward, Susan Agranove, and Josh Dubitsky for their contributions to the Temple and we welcome our new Board members Coralia Tudor, Bonnie and Elizabeth Teevan, Lisa Faden, and Heather Megdell.
We said good-bye to Barb and Paul Gerster at the end of June after eleven years as our caretaking couple and thanked them for their many years of service. Members of the Executive contributed personally to buy the Gersters a new HDTV to enhance their new home. At the same time, we welcome Ira (pronounced as ee-ra) and Sergio Saavedra, who have already begun to look after our buildings and grounds and also provide much needed support in our increasingly busy kitchen. Please welcome them to our family and help them to feel at home.
And speaking of "kitchen," I am pleased to announce that an anonymous donor has kicked off a campaign to update this important facility with new appliances and other needed changes by making a very generous donation of $8,500! More donations will be needed but this will lead to many efficiencies in providing meals for our growing congregation.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank the Board, our Rabbi, our volunteers, and indeed, all of our members for making my first year as President as easy as a responsibility such as this could be.
