Restmount Temple Israel Cemetery is located on Oxford Street West (map), bordering the west side of Or Shalom Cemetery. It has been there since 1933 when a group of London families decided they wanted an alternative Jewish burial site that was not bound by traditional Jewish rituals. As many of the offspring of these families have moved from London, there are fewer people to maintain the cemetery, leaving its future in question.
After much discussion of various proposals for revitalization, the Restmount Corporation board, wanting to maintain the essential character of their cemetery, approached Temple Israel as the synagogue in London which most closely fits the philosophy of the founding families. A joint committee was formed with people from both Restmount and Temple Israel; more discussion, research, and communications ensued, with the net result that many Temple Israel members became members of the cemetery corporation. This allowed a name change to Restmount Temple Israel Cemetery Corporation with a new board consisting of representatives of those Temple Israel members as well as members who are lineal descendants of the founding families. Rabbi Dressler also serves on the board, ex officio. The working committee has revised the Constitution and formed a list of Standing Orders and a current Fee Schedule.
More information is available from any cemetery board member, who can be reached by contacting Susan Richmond, Secretary-Treasurer (519-432-0703) firstname.lastname@example.org, or the Temple Israel office (519-858-4400). Membership, for Jews and non-Jewish spouses, is open to the community.
