I can tell it’s Spring, not because of the change in seasons but because of the end of another year at Temple Israel’s Religious School.
As we go our separate ways over the next months, I want to thank Rabbi Dressler, VP Education Elizabeth Teevan and all of the RS teachers for a wonderful year. Thanks go out as well to our RS families for their support and ensuring student attendance. We celebrate our students who grew so much during the past school session. We all look forward to next Fall with an updated curriculum and new educational experiences.
I also want to salute our RS graduates: students who finished their studies. They are ready to take on new roles and responsibilities at Temple Israel and within the Jewish community. Nowhere was this better demonstrated than at the recent bat mitzvah celebrations at Temple Israel for Yuki MacDougall and Lily Wright (and their families and friends).
Our Jewish education stresses learning how to lead an ethical and moral life, celebrating Jewish holidays, working for justice and equality for society, and being intellectually curious. In the recent Environics Institute for Survey Research, “2018 Survey of Jews in Canada”, these were identified by 80-95% of the 2,300 surveyed to be the most essential features of being Jewish. Outside of the family, formal education was overwhelmingly cited as a pillar of Jewish life whether through private day school, yeshiva, Hebrew school or Sunday school.
At Temple Israel we are committed to the education of our children, to adult education, and to individuals who connect with Rabbi Dressler and Temple Israel to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Judaism.
We are asking for your help to keep this commitment alive. This starts today and continues as part of our 2019-2020 dues campaign. We are asking you to consider making a financial contribution to our Education Fund or to the Religious School Sponsorship program. All donations will be combined in a new Education Endowment Fund which will support ongoing operational costs and, we hope, allow for the future planning and sustainability of our education programs. Donations can be made by cheque, or by calling our office.
We look forward to your help. Best wishes from myself and Daryl (and our family) to you for a peaceful and happy Spring/Summer.
